The recent endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari by the United Progressives Party, UPP may have held no significance for Imolites but emerging indications seem to suggest that the endorsement allegedly signals Gov Rochas Okorocha’s activation of his plan B for the 2019 governorship election.
According to sources who spoke to Nigeria Newspoint that event as innocuous as it look actually was a momentous event not only for the president but also for the governor and his political camp in the wake of their disappointing showing in the APC primary in which they suffered heavy losses.
It was learnt that the Imo State government may have engineered the party’s action preparatory to moving it’s structures over to UPP for the prosecution of 2019 election.
Sources revealed that the thinking of the governor’s camp is that by endorsing the president the party led by Chief Chekwas Okorie would have succeeded in pushing itself into the good books of the ruling APC as an ally they can trust and work with in the 2019 elections.
It was learnt that this alleged ground softening would be latched on by the the governor’s political sons and daughters contesting elective positions to join UPP which by now can rightly be described as an appendage of the ruling party, APC.
Some members of the party’s Imo State governorship candidate, Hon Tony Nwulu who spoke on strict anonymity revealed they have reasons to believe this story could be authentic.
According to them they have for long suspected that their party candidate may have been fronting for someone in view of his near zero presence in the state in terms of creation of awareness using various media platforms and branding of campaign vehicles
They alleged that the lawmaker disappeared soon after picking up the guber ticket of the party and has done little or nothing since then to show that he is serious about contesting governorship election and helping the party to become competitive ahead of next year’s elections.
When reached for comments on the developing issue Director General of Mezie Imo, Hon Nwulu’s campaign outfit denied the allegations pointing out that his principal remains the preferred choice of Imo electorate and can’t therefore drop his aspiration for any reason.
He said the adoption of President Buhari has nothing to do with Hon Nwulu guber ambition but rather it was done by the party national leadership because they believe that a Buhari who is running to serve for four years more, is preferable to the Igbo than an Alhaji Atiku Abubakar eight years presidency.
